What the CPR/AED Level C Course Covers

CPR Level C is the certification most Surrey employers mean when they ask for “CPR certification”. It is the full-scope course: you train on adults, children and infants rather than adults alone, and you learn to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) as part of the sequence rather than as an afterthought.

The practical work is done on manikins with an instructor watching and correcting technique, because compression depth and rate are the two things people most commonly get wrong under pressure. You will practise until it is right, not until you have watched a video.

• Adult, child and infant CPR, and how the technique changes between them
• AED use, pad placement and the safety checks before delivering a shock
• Choking — conscious and unconscious, across all three age groups
• Recognising cardiac arrest, stroke and severe allergic reaction early
• The recovery position and airway management
• Scene safety, and your legal protections as a responder in British Columbia

CPR Level A, Level C and BLS — Which One Do You Actually Need?

This is the question we field most often, and taking the wrong level means paying twice. The short version:

• Level A — adult CPR and AED only. Rarely enough for employment.
• Level C — adult, child and infant, plus AED and choking. This is the workplace standard and what most job postings mean.
• BLS — the healthcare provider level, for nurses, care aides, paramedics and dental staff. Adds two-rescuer CPR and bag-valve-mask technique.

If your employer has simply written “CPR certification required”, Level C is almost always the correct choice. If you work in direct patient care, ask whether they need BLS instead — we run that course too.

Who Takes CPR Training in Surrey

Our CPR classes are a mix of people sent by an employer and people who simply want to know what to do. Common reasons students come to us:

• Early childhood educators and childcare staff, where it is a licensing requirement
• Care aides and health support workers
• Security personnel, fitness instructors and coaches
• Construction and trades workers named as workplace first aid attendants

How Long Does CPR Certification Last?

Three years from the date of issue, in line with the Canadian standard. After that the certificate is no longer current and most employers will not accept it. There is no short renewal path once it has lapsed — you retake the course.

Our advice: note the expiry the day you receive the certificate, and book about a month before it runs out. People routinely discover an expired card the week a new job starts, and by then the next available class may not be soon enough.

What the Day Looks Like

Expect a single day, split between instruction and hands-on practice. Wear clothing you can kneel and move in, because you will be working on the floor with the manikins. There is a short written component and a practical skills demonstration, and you receive your certification on successful completion.

Classes are kept working rather than lecture-heavy. If you are nervous about the practical part — and plenty of people are — say so at the start. Instructors would far rather spend extra minutes with you than sign off someone who is not confident.

CPR Certification — Common Questions

How long is CPR Level C certification valid in BC?

CPR and first aid certificates in British Columbia are normally valid for three years from the date of issue. Once it expires you need to take the course again rather than a short refresher, so it is worth diarising the expiry date when you receive your certificate.

What is the difference between CPR Level A, C and BLS?

Level A covers adult CPR only. Level C is the common workplace standard and covers adults, children and infants, plus AED use and choking. BLS (Basic Life Support) is the healthcare provider level, used by nurses, paramedics and care aides, and includes two-rescuer techniques and bag-valve-mask ventilation. Most employers asking for “CPR certification” mean Level C.

Do I need CPR certification for my job in Surrey?

Many do. Childcare and ECE roles, care aides, security staff, fitness instructors, tradespeople and designated workplace first aid attendants are commonly required to hold current CPR. If your employer has named a specific level, bring that requirement with you and we will make sure you take the right course.

Is this course WorkSafeBC approved?

Yes. Our CPR/AED Level C training is recognised as equivalent to Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 1, which satisfies the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation requirement for a workplace first aid attendant at that level.

Do I get a certificate the same day?

You receive your certification on successful completion of the course, which includes both the written component and a practical skills demonstration on the manikins. Bring photo identification.
